PROJECTS

Why Malawi?

Most Malawians reside in rural locations, engaging in cash-crop and subsistence agriculture. The country’s few large urban centers include Lilongwe, the capital, and Blantyre, the commercial and industrial center. "Malawi's population has suffered from chronic malnutrition, high rates of infant mortality, and grinding poverty—a paradox often attributed to an agricultural system that has favored large estate owners." (Britannica.com)

  • Malawi is the 8th poorest country in the world. (2021 figures from Global Finance magazine, gfmag.com)

  • More than two-thirds of the population lives in extreme poverty. (Opportunity International, opportunity.org)

  • Blantyre has over 2,000 "street children" and close to 2,000 for Lilongwe. (McKnight Kalanda, Director of Child Development Affairs in the Ministry of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare. Reported by The Times Group Malawi, times.mw. November 8, 2017)

  • Of those, 217 street children in Blantyre are actually homeless and turn the streets into their home, while the number of the homeless in Lilongwe is 237. (McKnight Kalanda)

Blantyre Children's Project

The objectives of Butterfly Foundation for Peace (BFFP) center around improving the lives of all Malawian children, especially the 2,000+ "street kids" of Blantyre.

BFFP's programs address:

  • Education,

  • Health, and

  • Social and Mental Well-being

We work with children to develop their Self Esteem in an environment that encourages mindfulness and a positive atmosphere.

Mlanga Village Cyclone Rescue

January 24-25, 2022: Cyclone Ana dumped torrential rains on Madagascar, across Mozambique, and into Malawi, resulting in widespread flooding and destruction.

Particularly hard hit was the village of Mlanga, located in a rural area of Blantyre. Butterfly Foundation for Peace quickly went into action.
